Job Goal

The Somerville Community Schools Program provides After School and Out of School Time Care in the Somerville Public Schools. We operate After School programs from dismissal until 5:30 pm including early release days; full day programs during school vacation weeks and during summer. It is our mission to provide high quality, affordable, Out of School Time Care to Somerville children in grades Pre-K through 8.

Responsibilities

Teaching:

Assist the Leader in Training Director with a group of middle school students in becoming successful leaders

Assist in the creation and implementation of activities following the outline for the Leader In Training Program

Assist in the planning of special events and field trips

Implement Community Schools Behavior Management Policy

Assist in maintaining classroom environment including set up and maintenance of supplies

Follow program procedures to safeguard the health and safety of the children

Ability to cooperatively team teach

Provide supervision and feedback to participants

Build positive relationship with students and guardians

Other duties as assigned

Programming

Assist in the researching, planning and implementing of developmentally appropriate activity based curriculum to promote social, emotional, physical and cognitive development in accordance with Somerville Public Schools curriculum and School Committee goals around diversity and equity as well as summer program themes

Purchase materials and supplies in accordance with the Community Schools procedures

Submit overall plans for the program prior to June 1 and any weekly plans to Summer Program Director in two week increments

Staff:

Oversee all aspects of field trips including students and staff supervision as well as admissions and bus transportation

Program check-in and dismissal as well as supervision of students and staff during post program activities

Facilitate participation of Lead and Assistant Teachers with middle school students

Communicate regularly with Summer Program Director and Specialists to ensure middle school student needs are addressed

Attend mandatory summer program orientation on May 31, June 28, and July 5 as well as Summer Program Director weekly meetings.

Qualifications:

Have a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Child Guidance, Human Services, Nursing, Psychology, Physical Education, Recreation, Child Psychology, the Arts, Social Work, Sociology, or Child Care; and have 1 year of experience working with school-age children.

Experience planning and implementing activity-based curriculum in the subject area to be taught

Ability to set clear limits and supervise groups of school age children

Administrative and organizational skills

Good interpersonal skills and communication skills to collaborate with CS staff and Administration

Ability to supervise and support assisting staff

Sensitivity to and/or experience in working with children and adults from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds

Terms of Employment:

July 6, 2023 - August 11. 2023

Approximately but not more than 40 hours per week for 6 weeks Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:15 am-4:15 pm

Rate of Compensation: $25 per hour
